Deadpoolreceived a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) on Monday, which makes it -- as best we can tell --the first live-action superhero movie in either Best Picture category at the Globes. That's right: the Merc with the Mouth just became a trailblazer.
It's not abnormal to see superhero franchises represented at awards shows anymore, but it's usually to sweep the visual effects categories, with a notable exception for Heath Ledger's numerous posthumous wins for The Dark Knight. After winning the Critics' Choice Awards for Best Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy over the weekend, Deadpoolwill be a major presence at the 2017 Golden Globes.

Science fiction surged in the 1970s and '80s, but only crept into the Best Motion Picture category with Star Wars(1977) and E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (1982), which won.
The Lord of the Rings gathered statues at every awards show, but apart from a loyal fan base and being present at the same conventions, it has little in common with sci-fi or comic book content. The Dark Knight was famously shut out of Best Picture in 2009, before the Oscar category expanded to more than five films.
Wow. @deadpoolmovie is the first (live-action) superhero film ever nominated for a #GoldenGlobes best picture. https://t.co/mlBreFcUv5

It's worth noting as well that Deadpool is nominated as a comedy for Wade Wilson's constant stream of sass -- superhero movies, while punctuated with humor, typically self-identify as drama and then feel out-of-place for juries to stack against films like Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea.
Awards aside, Deadpoolbroke plenty of records with its February release, including biggest R-rated opening weekend, biggest opening for a first-time director for Tim Miller, and the biggest debut for its studio, 20th Century Fox, beating out Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It was also the biggest opening ever for Ryan Reynolds and for R-rated comic book superhero movies -- and it wasn't a sequel.

The Deadpool team has responded positively to the film's Critics' Choice wins and Golden Globe nominations, thrilled to be part of the conversation with the year's best films.
Meanwhile, writer/producer Rhett Reese is ready to ride this train to the end of the line.
