If you're due for a phone upgrade, Amazon Prime Day could be the perfect opportunity to scoop one up for a steep discount. Snagging an unlocked phone at Amazon eliminates the annoyance of coordinating a trade-in or new data plan at a specific carrier. Plus, you can usually find better deals.

Prime Day has officially kicked off today, July 16, but in true Amazon fashion, deals started popping up days ahead of time — particularly on Motorola and Samsung Galaxy phones. Apple iPhone deals have been no-shows so far, while a single (but stellar) Google Pixel deal is on our radar. We'll be keeping our eyes peeled throughout the sale though.

Why we like it

Just released two months ago, the Google Pixel 8a is "a compelling option for anyone who’s overdue for an affordable Android upgrade" — especially when you see its price tag. Mashable's Alex Perry called it "the best deal in Android-land" at full price, and just 24 hours before Prime Day, it's even better with a $50 discount. Besides the $100 gift card preorder deal, this is the first discount we've seen on this budget-friendly phone. It's basically a lite version of the Pixel 8, sharing the same Tensor G3 chip, over 24-hour battery life, Magic Editor and Magic Take camera tools, storage options, 8GB RAM, and up to 120Hz refresh rate. Where it differs is its size (it's just 0.1 inches taller and wider with a slightly smaller display), audio (no spatial audio, one less microphone), and camera.
