兵敗吉達，足协日本隊重演了4年前的好换曆史 ，但形勢完全不同 ：當時 ，帅准森保日本隊提前一輪鎖定了小組頭名 ，备战末戰作客小負沙特；這次森保一開局一勝二負，澳洲三場比賽僅打進一球 ，為1982年世預賽以來隊史最差開局 ，即使是1994年世界杯預選賽上 ，日本隊遭遇“黑色三分鍾”無緣出線，但前三場也有一勝一平一負。
