最近一段時間 ，南美年届國際足聯在探討世界杯改製為兩年一屆的足联质量可能性 。歐足聯主席切費林已經明確表態稱 ，官方歐足聯堅決反對這一改製。反对如今南美足聯也發布官方聲明，世界表達對世界杯改製的杯两比赛反對 。
“每兩年一次世界杯 ，捍卫很可能會扭曲最重要的南美年届足球賽事，降低其比賽質量 ，足联质量並破壞其獨特性和賽事標準 。官方”南美足聯在公告中開門見山 ，反对“世界杯之所以能吸引數十億人關注和期待 ，世界是杯两比赛因為代表持續懸念的淘汰過程直至高潮 。賽事本身富有吸引力，捍卫這會給參與者更大動力。南美年届”
南美足聯要捍衛球員和其它賽事 ：“兩年一次世界杯 ，將使得球員在國際比賽日中承擔過多負荷 。在當前賽製下 ，要協調賽程 、時間 、後期和比賽設備等事已經很難了 ，變更後就會更難 ，這甚至有可能威脅到俱樂部比賽和國家隊其它比賽的質量 。”
“世界杯的理念 ，是將最有才華的球員 、主帥和裁判聚在一起，在公平公正的情況下決出最佳球隊 。”南美足聯繼續寫道，“沒有恰當的準備 ，沒有團隊發揮技能 ，沒有技術人員設計和實施策略 ，這是不可能實現的 。這些都需要時間 、培訓和計劃 。南美足聯捍衛對比賽質量的追求 ，縮短世界杯舉辦間隔沒有任何理由 。”
