It's unclear what caused the momentary blackout, (Someone backing into the light switch? A brief power outage due the rain in D.C. today? A patriotic ghost?). But it was certainly some on-the-nose pathetic fallacy. One of those scenarios that, if you pitched it for a movie scene, you'd probably be asked to "tone it down a little."
UPDATE: July 17, 2018, 4 p.m. PDT Apparently, it was Chief of Staff John Kelly, according to Washington Post photographer Jabin Botsford.
